Garden City Police Department — Back-to-School Safety Reminder

As students return to the classroom, the Garden City Police Department is reminding drivers, parents, and pedestrians to stay alert in school zones and around school buses.

Slow Down in School Zones
Reduced speed limits are in effect during posted school hours. Officers will be increasing patrols near schools to enforce speed limits and keep students safe as they walk, bike, and are dropped off.

Stop for School Buses
Colorado law requires drivers to stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm — in both directions on undivided roads. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and dangerous, and violators can face fines and license points.

Watch for Pedestrians
Kids are excited to be back and don't always look before crossing. Drivers should stay off phones, watch for children near bus stops and crosswalks, and be especially cautious in neighborhoods and near schools during morning and afternoon rush.

Tips for Parents and Students

• Arrive at the bus stop a few minutes early — no need to rush into the street.
• Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching it.
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of a vehicle.
• Walk, don't run, across streets and crosswalks.
